Another might judge gaps well but approach too quickly. Someone else might struggle with lane choice, observations or understanding the effect another vehicle has on the traffic they're watching.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey're all having problems with \"roundabouts\", but they don't necessarily need the same lesson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eA Lesson Plan Should Be a Framework, Not a Script\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYour pupil hasn't read your lesson plan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTraffic hasn't read it either.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo however carefully you've prepared your ADI Part 3 lesson, things can change once you start driving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's why we don't believe in teaching trainee instructors to memorise a script.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA good lesson plan gives you a \u003cstrong\u003eframework\u003c\/strong\u003e. It helps you understand the subject, establish what the pupil already knows, identify what they need to improve and decide how you're going to help them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen you adapt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what real driving instructors have always had to do, and it's exactly the skill you need to develop for ADI Part 3.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eKnow What You're Looking For\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeeing a fault is only the beginning.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImagine your pupil approaches a T-junction too quickly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou could simply say:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"You're approaching too quickly. Slow down earlier next time.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut have you actually solved anything?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy were they too fast?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDid they identify the junction early enough? Did they understand whether it was open or closed? Did they know the appropriate speed? Did they understand how much braking was required? Were they distracted by another task? Was it a knowledge problem, an understanding problem, a skill problem or simply a lack of confidence?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUntil you understand the cause, you're effectively guessing at the solution.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stronger your subject knowledge becomes, the easier it is to analyse what you're seeing and provide the right support.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eParticularly Important for Roundabouts\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Roundabouts\" isn't really one lesson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are numerous individual skills involved.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYour pupil needs to recognise the roundabout early enough, understand the road signs and markings, choose an appropriate lane, adjust their speed, make effective observations and judge a safe gap.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there are mini-roundabouts, larger multi-lane roundabouts and spiral roundabouts to consider.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven \u003cstrong\u003ejudging a safe gap\u003c\/strong\u003e deserves attention in its own right.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInstead of simply telling somebody to \"go when it's safe\", an instructor needs to help the pupil understand what they're looking at and how the movement and position of other vehicles can affect their decision.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's the difference between telling somebody what to do and actually \u003cstrong\u003eteaching them how to make the decision for themselves\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eFrom Basic Controls to Real Traffic Situations\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe folder begins with the foundations because they're important.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCockpit drill, mirrors, foot controls, clutch control, hand controls and blind spots might seem basic once you've been driving for years, but they're completely new to a beginner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs an instructor, you need to be able to take something you now do almost automatically and explain it clearly to somebody who may have never sat behind a steering wheel before.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom there, the folder progresses through moving off and stopping, junctions, roundabouts, crossroads and pedestrian crossings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat gives you a resource you can continue using as your pupils progress.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eControlled and Uncontrolled Pedestrian Crossings\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePedestrian crossings are another area where good subject knowledge matters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe folder covers both \u003cstrong\u003euncontrolled and controlled pedestrian crossings\u003c\/strong\u003e, helping you understand the differences and the responsibilities placed on the driver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis means you're not simply teaching a pupil to recognise a crossing. You're helping them understand observations, approach speed, anticipation, vulnerable road users and how to respond safely to what is happening around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are skills that matter long after the driving test has been passed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eDesigned for ADI Part 3 — Useful Long After You've Passed\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough we've designed the folder with \u003cstrong\u003eADI Part 3 training\u003c\/strong\u003e firmly in mind, its usefulness doesn't suddenly end when you qualify.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKeep it in the car.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUse it when planning lessons.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRefer back to it when you've got a pupil struggling with a particular subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUse it to refresh your own knowledge before teaching something you haven't covered for a while.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eQualified instructors can also use it to review their lesson structure and prepare for their \u003cstrong\u003eADI Standards Check\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGood subject knowledge isn't something you need simply to pass Part 3. It's one of the foundations of being a professional driving instructor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eDon't Memorise Lessons. Understand Them.\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a huge difference between knowing what somebody else said in an ADI Part 3 mock test and understanding why they said it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's why we'd always encourage trainees to build their knowledge rather than copy somebody else's performance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you understand the subject, you have options.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf your pupil needs more support, you can provide it. If they're doing well, you can reduce it.
