them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eKnowing How to Do It Isn't the Same as Knowing How to Teach It\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the biggest changes people have to make when they begin training to become a driving instructor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou've probably been driving for years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou recognise a speed limit without really thinking about it. You adjust your speed for a bend automatically. You decide whether you can pass a parked vehicle almost instinctively.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut now you've got to explain those decisions to somebody else.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMore importantly, you've got to recognise \u003cstrong\u003ewhy they're getting them wrong\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat requires considerably more knowledge than simply being able to drive yourself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ADI Part 3 Lesson Plan Folder – Part 2 helps you break these subjects down so you can think about what your pupil actually needs to learn rather than simply telling them what to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eOvertaking Needs to Be Taught\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOvertaking is a perfect example.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToo often, overtaking becomes something that's only discussed when an opportunity happens to appear during a lesson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut it deserves to be taught properly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore an overtake is even considered, your pupil should be thinking about three fundamental questions:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIs it safe?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIs it legal?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIs it necessary?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA broken centre line doesn't automatically mean you should overtake. It may indicate that overtaking is legally possible, but the driver still has to decide whether there is enough visibility, enough space and enough time to complete the manoeuvre safely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe situation is different again on a dual carriageway, where observations, following distance, speed differential, lane changing and returning safely to the left all become important.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePart 2 helps you prepare to teach these subjects rather than simply waiting for an overtaking opportunity to appear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eDual Carriageways and Motorways\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHigher-speed roads introduce a completely different set of demands for a learner or newly qualified driver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlanning needs to happen earlier. Following distances increase. Mirrors become increasingly important and decisions need to be made well before reaching a junction or exit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe folder covers \u003cstrong\u003edriving on dual carriageways, overtaking, leaving a dual carriageway and motorway driving\u003c\/strong\u003e, giving you a structured resource for teaching the knowledge and skills pupils need on faster roads.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe aim isn't simply to help somebody survive a dual carriageway lesson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's to help them understand how to make safe decisions when they're eventually driving there alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eMeeting Traffic\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMeeting situations can look simple until you actually have to teach them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWho has priority?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIs there enough room for two vehicles?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhere could you wait?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat happens if the other driver doesn't behave as expected?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA pupil may understand the basic idea perfectly well but still struggle because they're looking too close to the front of the car, identifying the situation too late or failing to anticipate what another road user is likely to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGood instruction means going beyond simply saying, \u003cstrong\u003e\"Give way to that car.\"\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe want the pupil to recognise the developing situation early enough to make that decision for themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eSpeed Limits – Don't Just Teach the Numbers\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnowing the national speed limit isn't enough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA pupil needs to recognise what speed limit applies to the road they're actually driving on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey need to understand signs, road types and changes of limit. They also need to recognise that the speed limit is a \u003cstrong\u003emaximum\u003c\/strong\u003e, not necessarily a target.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA road may have a particular legal limit while the conditions require a considerably lower speed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePart 2 therefore covers \u003cstrong\u003espeed limits, how to recognise them and recognising when the limit changes\u003c\/strong\u003e, helping instructors teach the understanding behind the number on the sign.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eCountry Roads and Bends\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCountry roads are another subject where simply telling somebody to \"slow down\" doesn't teach them very much.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy do they need to slow down?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHow much should they slow down?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat can they actually see?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA pupil needs to learn how the road itself provides information.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe severity of the bend, road markings, warning signs, hedges, telegraph poles, the position of other vehicles and the available view can all provide clues.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe objective is to develop a driver who can \u003cstrong\u003eread the road ahead\u003c\/strong\u003e, anticipate what they cannot yet see and adjust their speed and position accordingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eAnticipation and Planning\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the most important areas of driving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA good driver isn't simply reacting to what is happening immediately in front of them. They're constantly gathering information and asking what could happen next.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA pedestrian approaching a crossing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA vehicle waiting at a side road.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrake lights several vehicles ahead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA parked car with somebody sitting in the driver's seat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA cyclist approaching a narrowing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNone of these necessarily requires immediate action, but they all provide information.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePart 2 helps you think about how you can develop your pupil's \u003cstrong\u003eanticipation and planning\u003c\/strong\u003e, rather than allowing every situation to become a last-second reaction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eIndependent Driving – Sat Nav and Road Signs\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIndependent driving doesn't mean abandoning your pupil and hoping for the best.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's an opportunity to see how well they can apply their skills when they're taking greater responsibility for the drive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePart 2 covers independent driving using both \u003cstrong\u003esat nav directions and road signs\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe important lesson isn't simply following the route.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's helping the pupil understand that the sat nav is giving them directions — \u003cstrong\u003eit isn't driving the car\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf a direction cannot be followed safely, the priority remains driving safely.
