See if you can apply
In a world that seems to shift beneath our feet, some things remain constant: the value of safety, the importance of independence, and the dignity of a skilled profession. Becoming a driving instructor is not just a job — it's a calling.
Whether you're looking for a fresh start, greater control over your work-life balance, or a career that offers lasting value, training to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is a proven path to personal and professional fulfilment.
You’ll help people take their first steps towards freedom on the road — and in life. You’ll work to your own schedule, earn a reliable income, and do so with the confidence of knowing you’re backed by a respected national qualification regulated by the DVSA.
Let us show you how to get there.
The Path to Becoming an ADI: A Step-by-Step Guide
Becoming a fully qualified driving instructor is a structured, three-part process laid out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Our training programme guides you every step of the way — no shortcuts, no confusion, no wasted time.
ADI Part 1 – The Theory Test - see our Theory Test Site

This first stage covers the essential knowledge you’ll need to become an instructor:
Rules of the road
Instructional techniques
Hazard perception - 34 CGI clips - 100 Real life ones
The Highway Code
DVSA standards and regulations
You’ll take a multiple-choice test and a hazard perception assessment — both requiring strong, reliable understanding, which we’ll help you develop through proven study resources and tutor support.
ADI Part 2 – Driving Ability
10 hours one to one training in Telford, Shrewsbury, Stoke or Featherstone
Here, your own driving skills are put to the test. You’ll be expected to drive to a higher standard than a learner, showing:
Excellent control of the vehicle
Strong observational and planning skills
Safe, smooth, and legal driving on a variety of roads
This is a practical driving test conducted by a senior DVSA examiner. We’ll help you prepare with one-to-one coaching and structured mock test practice.
ADI Part 3 – Instructional Ability
40 hours training - 2 online courses - 5 hours Zoom - 20 hours (3 days) in car
This is the final and most in-depth stage — where you’ll demonstrate that you can teach safely and effectively. You’ll need to:
Plan and deliver structured driving lessons
Manage risk at all times
Tailor your teaching to meet individual pupil needs
Show client-centered learning in action
You’ll be assessed on a real driving lesson with a learner. Our specialist trainers will guide you through the 17 DVSA competencies using simple frameworks, real-time coaching, and recorded feedback sessions.

– David P., Shrewsbury

"It’s not just about learning how to teach. They taught me how to stay calm, how to plan lessons, and how to connect with each pupil. My trainer made me believe I could actually do it — and now I’m an ADI."
– Sharon L., Telford
"I tried a big national company before but felt like just a number. Driver Training Ltd was completely different. Real people, real care, and a clear roadmap. Couldn’t recommend them more."
– James R., Wolverhampton
